567 | He is the son of Pierre Laverdure dit Melanson and Priscilla Melanson. Pierre was a tailor by trade and a captain in the militia at Mines, Acadie. He was supposedly a Huguenot, and a Calviniste (although that isn't confirmed). Pierre was of French and English descent as explained below: His father, Pierre Laverdure dit Melanson, left France because of persecution of his Protestant faith, finding refuge in England. It was there that he met his wife Priscilla Melanson or Malleson. Pierre senior moved to Boston with his wife Priscilla and youngest son in 1667 (after the French retook Acadia), where he probably died. After his father died, his mother was remarried to William Wright, on 18 April 1680. After initially settling at Port Royal, Pierre Melanson was later one of the founders of Grand Pre with Pierre Theriot. He was a stonemason. "In the spring of 1657, the family embarked in England aboard the vessel Satisfaction under the command of Captain Peter Butler, forming part of the company which Thomas Temple was transporting to Acadia, over which he had been named Governor after its capture by the English. Having first stopped at Boston, Captain Butler next went to the fort on the St. John River, where a group of his passengers disembarked, and finally to Port-Royal. It appears the La Verdure (or Melanson, as they were known) family stopped at Fort St. John. After the Treaty of Breda, under which in 1667 England ceded Acadia to France, he and his parents went to seek refuge under the Protestant government at Boston. | Melanson, Pierre (I3928)

569 | He may have arrived in Lynn, 1643, on the ship "An Cleeve" out of London. All their children are believed to have born in England. John Winthrop, Jr "did at great costs and charges imbarque himself with many workmen, servants, and materials for the setting up of iron works". 19 Jan 1643 Town of Boston granted to John Winthrop and his associates 3000 acres of land on the Manatiquot River to be laid out adjoining their said iron works. The "An Cleeve" was commissioned by John Winthrop, Jr - a list of passengers does not survive. In 1646, Quinton Pray worked in Lynn, MA in the Iron Works as a fineryman. He was first at the iron works in Kittery, Maine. By 1651 he had moved to Braintree where he was a supervisor at the Iron Works there. NEHG Register, Vol. 55, 1901, p.280 "Pray of York & Kittery, Maine" by Henry Ernest Woods. States that Quinton Pray appears to have been one of the ironworkers who came to Lynn in 1643, under the auspices of the Iron Works Company, at its beginning in New England. He perhaps sailed from England when John Winthrop, Jr, in 1643 brought many workmen, servants & material for the setting up of iron workers, in the good ship the An Cleeve, of London. Later he removed to Braintree, continuing in the Iron Works there. It may be significant that Anderson & Downing, two of the foundrymen at Lynn were from Scotland. Quentin thought to be a not uncommon given name in Scotland. Suffolk Deeds, Liber XI, Rockwell & Churchill Press, Boston, 1900 12 Sep 1667 Deed from John Paine of Boston, sold to Richard Thayer of Brantery [Braintree] a dwelling hour, coal house, orchards, dam, with the lands adjoining thereto on the North side of the Manaticote River. Part of it formerly in the hands of Quinton Pray, otherwise known as the Iron Works at Braintree. Excepting a pasture of six acres, barn & part of the orchard thereto, three acres sold to Thomas Thayer, and four acres sold to John Pray and a parcel called by the name of Huns Lot. Also a parcel of land of 30 acres joining up to the South end of the dam aforesaid, in Braintree between the lands of Thomas Thayer toward the west and lands of Capt Thomas Savage towards the East, abutting up the sd River Manaticot on the North. Signed by John Paine Acknowledged by Paine 16.7.67. [September 16th] Quinton Pray's death is recorded in Braintree. Joan was named administrator of his estate. Quinton and Joan are said to be buried Hancock, Cemetery, Quincy, Norfolk Co, MA Birthplace is not documented! One entry at Family Tree states that the "Quentin" Pray who was married to Joan Vallance was christened 23 Nov 1595 in Chiddingstone, Kent, England. Other sources are that he was born in 1595 of South Berwick, York, Maine and was christened 27 August 1594 in South Berwick, York, Maine (which didn't, of course, exist in 1594 or 1595). Another entry suggests he was christened with a brother on 23 November 1595 in Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland. Quinton Pray was married to Joan Valliance 21 June 1621 in Mayfield, Sussex, England. Christening records for many of their known children (whose names come from U.S. records after the immigrated) have been located in Frant, Sussex, England, making Quinton Pray's birthplace less likely to be in the north of England, as some have suggested. | Pray, Quinton (I9393)

570 | He was a blacksmith and sawmill contractor in France, so he received a territorial concession in Port Royal, on 3 July 1687. Shortly after establishing himself in Port Royal, he was suspected of illicit trade with the English of New England, in 1706. The charges were again restored a few years later. The king's protection served him well though, during these accusations of corruption, because he was just ordered to pay a fine. | Allain, Louis (I11571)

Antoine died in Grand-Pré (according to the 'Déclarations de Belle-Île-en-Mer') ? sometime between 1719 and 1730. He was still alive when his son Joseph married in 1719, but deceased 'sometime before July 20, 1730' ? when his granddaughter was christened. Here's what's recorded in the Saint-Charles-des-Mines parish records for that date: "In the year 1730, on the 20th of July, was baptized by the undersigned priest, Anasthasie, born the same day and year, daughter of René LeBlanc, (a son of the late Antoine LeBlanc) and Anne Térriot, his wife. ..." It's presumed that Antoine was buried in the Saint-Charles-des-Mines parish cemetery ? though there's no 'official' documentation to confirm this. | LeBlanc, Antoine (I3387)

Excerpted from the County Gazetteer & Directory of Caledonia & Essex Counties, compiled by Hamilton Child, May 1887: "Another vessel laden with emigrants sailed from Greenock, Scotland in 1775, and got to Boston three weeks before the battle of Bunker Hill. They landed, but the British would not permit them to leave. Among them was Robert Hall and family, the great-grandfather of George L. Hall, now of South Ryegate. William, son of Robert, was pressed into the British army and fought at the battle of Bunker Hill. After nine months the family was moved by the British to Halifax, N.S. It would seem that the family of Antoine remained in Port-Royal for many years, possibly until their deportation in 1755. Following the death of Jeanne Corporon in 1735, Antoine married a second time to Anne Orillon, of Port-Royal (daughter of Charles and Marie Bastarache) on Feb. 28, 1737. Henry Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany Also Known As: "Henry Stuart", "Lord Darnley" Birthdate: December 07, 1545 Birthplace: Temple Newsam, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England Death: February 10, 1567 (21) Provost's House, Kirk o'the Field, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland (Asphyxiation) Place of Burial: Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland Immediate Family: Son of Matthew Stuart, 13th Earl of Lennox and Lady Margaret Douglas, Countess of Lennox Husband of Mary I, Queen of Scots Father of James I of England and Ireland, VI of Scotland Brother of Charles Stuart, 1st Earl of Lennox Occupation: 1st Duke of Albany, Lord Darnley, King Henry Stuart or Stewart, Lord Darnley, also called (1565?67) Earl of Ross, Duke of Albany (born Dec. 7, 1545, Temple Newsom, Yorkshire, Eng.?died Feb.10, 1567, Edinburgh), cousin and second husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, father of King James I of Great Britain and Ireland (James VI of Scotland), and direct ancestor of all subsequent British sovereigns. Darnley was the son of Matthew Stewart, 4th earl of Lennox, whose pretension to the throne of Scotland was contested by James Hamilton, 2nd earl of Arran. Darnley?s mother, formerly Margaret Douglas, had a claim to the English crown as granddaughter of Henry VII. She planned to secure her son?s succession in England by his marriage with the other candidate, Mary. The couple had become acquainted in France shortly after the death of Mary?s first husband, the French king Francis II. In February 1565 Darnley, who had been living in England, went to Scotland with the permission of Queen Elizabeth I. By late April it was known that Mary wished to make him her husband. She created him successively earl of Ross (a rank previously reserved for a son of the Scottish king) and duke of Albany. Elizabeth and the English privy council sent word that the proposed marriage was ?dangerous to the common amity? of the two countries. Nonetheless, on July 29, 1565, the marriage was celebrated according to the Roman Catholic rite. It was offensive to the Scottish Protestant ministry, for whom John Knox was the spokesman; to the political ambition of James Stewart, earl of Moray (Mary?s illegitimate half brother); and to the Hamilton claim to the Scottish throne. It became evident, even to Mary, that superficial charm was Darnley?s only positive attribute. This gave way to indolence, arrogance, drunkenness, and jealousy of Mary?s secretary, David Riccio, in whose murder (March 9, 1566) Darnley was involved. He betrayed his accomplices, but they showed Mary his written agreement to Riccio?s murder, and he was unable to clear himself with her. The birth (June 19, 1566) of a son, James, to Mary and Darnley was eventually to solve the problem of the English, as well as the Scottish, succession. But Darnley remained an embarrassment to all. While Mary was absent from their temporary residence, Kirk o?Field, near Edinburgh, the house was blown up. The body of Darnley, who had apparently been strangled, was found in a nearby garden. Three months later Darnley?s widow married James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, the instigator of the murder. | Stewart, Henry (I14348)

592 | Henry was born in the royal Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, near Paris, the son of King Francis I and Claude, Duchess of Brittany (daughter of Louis XII of France and Anne, Duchess of Brittany, and a second cousin of her husband). His father was captured at the Battle of Pavia in 1525 by the forces of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, and held prisoner in Spain. To obtain his release, it was agreed that Henry and his older brother be sent to Spain in his place. They remained in captivity for over four years. Henry married Catherine de' Medici, a member of the ruling family of Florence, on 28 October 1533, when they were both fourteen years old. At this time, his elder brother was alive and there was little prospect of Henry coming to the throne. The following year, he became romantically involved with a thirty-five-year-old widow, Diane de Poitiers. Henry and Diane had always been very close: the young lady had fondly embraced Henry on the day he, as a 7-year-old child, set off to captivity in Spain, and the bond had been renewed after his return to France. In a tournament to honor his father's new bride, Eleanor, Henry and his older brother were dressed as chevaliers, in which Henry wore Diane's colors. Extremely confident, mature and intelligent, Diane left Catherine powerless to intervene. She did, however, insist that Henry sleep with Catherine in order to produce heirs to the throne. When his elder brother Francis, the Dauphin and Duke of Brittany, died in 1536 after a game of tennis, Henry became heir apparent to the throne. He succeeded his father on his 28th birthday and was crowned King of France on 25 July 1547 at Reims Cathedral Henry II also had three illegitimate children: By Filippa Duci: Diane, duchesse d'Angoulême (1538?1619). By Lady Janet Stewart (1508?1563), the illegitimate daughter of James IV of Scotland: Henri d'Angoulême (1551 ? June 1586). He was legitimized and became governor of Provence. 597 | His father was ALEXIS BRAUD BREAUX (1721?1811) and his mother, was MARGUERITE BARRIAULT (1726?1805). Both were born and died in Canada. Marriage 13 Apr 1769 ? Donaldsonville, Ascension, Louisiana, USA MARGUERITE BREAUX (1747 CAN ?1815 LA) They had three children in 12 years. Member of Attakapas Militia; burial record at St Martin de Tours Church [V4 #534] In the 1766 census, Firmin Breau is listed as a bachelor, aged nineteen, living at Bayou Tortue on the Cote Gelee. He must have soon thereafter moved to the District of Cabahanoce (present St. James Parish) since he was married there and is listed in the census of that district taken in 1769. He is shown as a member of the Attakapas militia in 1777. He was among the Acadian settlers who appear on the roll of the company of Captain Augustin Grevenberg, which joined Galvez's expedition that captured the British forts in the lower Mississippi valley in 1779. "S.A.R. Spanish Records, Spanish-English War 1779-1783. Men Under General Don Bernardo Galvez..." N.P.: Louisiana Society of the S.A.R., 1925 As far back as 14 Mar 1786, Firmin owned a large tract of land extending from Bayou Vermilion all the way to the forty arpent road east of Bayou Teche, part of a larger tract ninety-two arpents wide that had been originally granted by the Spanish government to Jean-Francois Ledee. He lived on this land, at the west end of the bridge over Bayou Teche, and he probably built "Breau's Bridge" for which the town is named. (St. Martin Parish Succession No. 38 and Suit No. 334) In 1792 he bought a tract of four arpents by forty arpents depth on Bayou Vermilion from Joseph Broussard. He apparently disposed of this land sometime before his death since it is not included in the inventory filed in his succession. On 24 Jul 1796 he bought from Pierre Broussard a tract of land ten by forty arpents on the east bank of Bayou Teche, increasing his holdings on the east side of the bayou to twenty arpents front. This conveyance stipulates that the land was bounded by Claude Martin on one side and by the vendee on the other. These boundaries indicate that the property purchased lay on the downstream side of Breau's original purchase. At the time of his death, he still owned land at La Pointe as well as at "Grande Prairie" (present day Lafayette). The marriage record of Agricole Breau dated 1 Jun 1813 recites that his deceased father, Firmin Breau, resided at La Pointe (present day Breaux Bridge) while he lived. Prior to his death, he made a donation of his property to his six sons and six daughters. He made the donations to his daughters in the names of their husbands, as Louisiana law at the time prohibited married women from holding legal title to land separately from their husbands. | Breaux, Pierre Firmin (I8227)
