2180 | Verna Lee Hebert Henry, 86, passed away peacefully at her New Iberia home with her caring family by her side on Friday, October 27, 2017. Mrs. Henry was born on August 21, 1931 in New Iberia. On March 25, 1950, she was united in Holy Matrimony to Percy J. Henry, and they were blessed with five children. In 1959, Percy purchased an existing convenience store for her birthday. Verna operated the store in the daytime for the first few months of operation while Percy was still a salesman on the road. It became the first local convenience store to begin operating from 7 to 11. In 1963, they went on to build the first strip mall in New Iberia and relocated the convenience store to Center Street. After raising her five children, her love to care for children continued at Muppets and Friends Nursery, where she served as a grandmother to hundreds of children for over 20 years. She was blessed with many long lasting friendships as a patron at Pat Walker?s Figure Salon, then as an employee. She had a passion for flower gardening, dancing, reading and cooking for her family. Even though she did not eat seafood, to the delight of her family, she mastered many seafood dishes. She had an award winning jambalaya that; unfortunately, her children have yet to perfect. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, visiting family and friends at House of Cache, and her weekly visits to the hair salon. She and Percy always had an open door policy for family and friends and often offered a safe and loving place for many to stay. Mrs. Henry was a member of New Hope Rebekah Lodge No. 70 for over 60 years and a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 66 (I.O.O.F), a fraternal organization derived from 17th century England and founded on the North American Continent in 1819 for the purpose of giving aid to those in need and of pursuing projects for the benefit of all mankind. She was also a faithful longtime member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Affectionately known as ?Maw? to many, Mrs. Henry was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Survivors include her two sons; three daughters, nine grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, a sister-in-law; a God daughter; numerous nieces and nephews and her beloved dog, Prince Albert Henry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Percy Joseph Henry; her parents, Clomare Hebert and Elinda Badeaux Hebert; her sister, Leatrice LeBlanc; her brother, Verland Hebert; and daughter-in-law, Cyrillia ?Ann? 2183 | Via Find A Grave: Birth: 1610, Barnstaple, Devon, England Death: Sep. 1682, Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, USA Richard Bourne was born circa 1610 in England. He is well-known in the history of Massachusetts because he was a missionary for many years to the Native Americans and worked for 20 years to obtain land at Mashpee for a Reservation. He is often referred to by historians as a man of integrity and his goal was for the Natives to manage their own affairs. Richard was one of the 13 men who joined Edmund Freeman to settle Sandwich between 1637-1640. Around 1636 Richard married a woman named Bathsheba, daughter of Andrew Hallett, Sr. Richard and Bathsheba had four sons, the first probably born at Plymouth and the rest probably born Sandwich. Job, Elisha, Shearjashub, and Ezra. In addition to his work as an ordained pastor to the Indians, Richard was also involved in town affairs in Plymouth and Sandwich serving as Selectman and on various committees. When Sandwich was accepted as a town in 1639, Richard Bourne was one of two men appointed Deputies to the Court, a position he held for 14 years. Richard lived on what is now the end of Dock Lane off Main Street, in the Ox Pasture Neck/Jarvesville area of Sandwich where the glass factory would eventually be built. His next door neighbor was Thomas Tupper. After Richards' death in 1682, a general law on Indian Village organization in Plymouth Colony was passed. It laid out a series of laws and regulations for the Indians. In 1684, a new meeting-house was built to replace the first Mashpee Church, and it has been maintained to this day as his monument. On July 2, 1677, Richard married the much younger Ruth (Sargent) Winslow in Sandwich, the widow of Jonathan Winslow. Elder John Chipman tried to dissuade him from marrying Ruth. Interestingly, after Richard died and Elder Chipman had lost his wife, he in turn married Ruth. Richard died in Sandwich. His burial location is not known. Some believe he was buried on his own land near his house. It is hoped that this will be the final surviving record once all mergers have been completed. THANK YOU See also BIO:S (1) Chad (Chaddus) Browne Birth: [ABT] 1600 [OF] High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England Death: [BEFORE] 2 SEP 1650 in Providence, Rhode Island Occupation: Baptist Minister Note: Chaddus first located at Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts but soon removed to Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island in sympathy with Roger Williams' religious and political sentiments. Chaddus was a prominent citizen of Providence and pastorate of the First Baptist Church of Providence where he was ordained in 1642 as the first settled minister of that church (disputed somewhat as some believe Roger Williams was the first minister of that church). Title -Rev. Immigration - [date: 1638] [place: In the "Martin" with his wife and son John at Boston, Suffolk County, MA] (2) CHAD BROWNE OF PROVIDENCE, R. I., AND FOUR GENERATIONS OF HIS DESCENDANTS By William Bradford Browne of North Adams, Mass. "1. CHAD1 BROWNE, the immigrant ancestor of the well-known Rhode Island family that forms the subject of this article, arrived in Boston in the early part of July 1638, in the ship Martin, accompanied by his wife Elizabeth and his son John, aged 8 years. His parentage and the date and place of his birth have not been discovered, but he married at High Wycombe, co. Bucks, England, 11 Sept. 1626, ELIZABETH SHARPAROWE, who survived him and died probably about 1672. He died in or before 1663, being mentioned as 'deceased' in a deed from William Field of that year. "On the voyage of the Martin to New England one of the passengers, Sylvester Baldwin of Aston Clinton, co. Bucks, died, having declared on 21 June his nuncupative will, which was proved on 13 July 1638 before Deputy Governor Dudley by the oaths of Chad Browne and three other men. This fixes the arrival of Chad Browne in New England as not later than 13 July 1638. In the same year he proceeded to Providence, where he was associated with Roger Williams and was a signer of the famous Compact which denied religious interference in civil affairs. His name also appears in other agreements and compacts. In 1640 he was a member of a committee to consider the Colony bounds. He is at times called a surveyor. "In 1642 he was ordained as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Providence, the mother church of that faith in America. Whether he was first or second pastor rests entirely on one's premises. He was certainly the first ordained pastor to continue in the office for a long period. Roger Williams's connection, as preacher, in this church was certainly brief, and is not clearly understood, owing to the loss of the early records. The oldest authority available is the 'History of the Baptists in America,' by Morgan Edwards, compiled about 1772. The author says: 'Williams was pastor from the establishment of the church until he left the Colony for England in 1643, and he then resigned it to Messrs. Brown and Wickenden. Mr. Chad Brown died between 1660 and 1665, leaving the church in charge of his colleague.' "For a brief summary of Chad Browne's character one can do no better than to quote the remarks of Hague in his 'Historical Discourse' delivered at this church: 'Contemporary with Roger Williams, he possessed a cooler temperament, and was happily adapted to sustain the interests of religion just where that great man failed. . . We know only enough of his character to excite the wish to know more; but from that little it is clear that he was highly esteemed as a man of sound judgment and of a Christian spirit. Often referred to as the arbitrator of existing differences, in a state of society where individual influence was needed as a substitute for well digested laws, he won that commendation which the Savior pronounced when he said, "blessed are the peace-makers, for they shall be called the children of God."' "The home lot of Chad Browne was at the corner of the present Market Square and College Street in Providence, and Brown University now occupies part of that lot. He was buried on his own ground (a spot now occupied by the Court House), whence his remains were removed in 1792 to the North Burial Ground, where the gravestone then erected may still be seen, with the following inscription: 'In memory of Chad Brown Elder of the Baptist Church in this town. He was one of the original Proprietors of the Providence Purchase Having been exiled from Massachusetts for Conscience Sake He had five sons John, James, Jeremiah, Chad and Daniel Who have left a numerous Posterity. He died about A.D. 1665. This Monument was erected by the Town of Providence.' "Chad Browne left a will, as is shown by references in deeds, but its contents are unknown to us. The year 1672 witnessed a general adjustment of his estate, caused most probably by the death of his widow near that time, lands being thus released which the conveyances state had been left to her by her husband and were to revert to his sons after her death. The records of the Town of Providence mention a Chad Brown as present at the drawing of various land allotments at intervals from 1675 to 1683, but whether they refer to the first Chad Browne's son of the same name or were drawn by proxy in his own right of ancient holdings is not clear. Chad Browne, Sr., owned large parcels of land in the present Gloucester, Scituate, and Johnston. There appears no record otherwise of this son Chad, except the reference on his father's gravestone. "Abundant proof is on record of the paternity of the three sons John, Jeremiah, and James. There appears no definite statement relating to the son Daniel, but he has always been considered by all authorities a son of Chad Browne, and the use of the name Chad among his descendants seems to substantiate the fact. No mention appears of daughters in the family, although the presumption is that there were daughters. Two peculiarities are noted in the study of this family, the infrequent use of the name of its founder among his descendants and the very prompt abandonment of their father's faith by the majority of his near kindred. Two of his sons became devoted adherents of the Church of England and many of his descendants at a later interval were Quakers. "Children, all except the first probably born at Providence: None of the following is proved by actual documentation... Most authors state that the parents of Chad Browne are unknown. There is no record of any baptism, etc. that would indicate Chad's father was Arthur - and that given name is NOT use among his descendants which would be highly unusual. Father: Arthur Browne b: 1567 in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England c: 15 NOV 1567 in Dunchurch, Warwick, England Mother: Dorothy Alchurch b: 15 AUG 1576 in St Martins, Birmingham, Warwick, England c: 15 AUG 1576 in St Martins, Birmingham, Warwick, England Marriage 1 Elizabeth Sharparowe b: 1604 in Melchbourne Befordshire England Married: 11 SEP 1626 in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England | Browne, Chad (I5061)
