355 | David McNamara immigrated from either Ireland or the United States to Nova Scotia, somewhere between Halifax and the Canso strait and possibly in the Guysborough region. There is evidence of a David McNamara being a member of the Royal Fencible American Regiment in 1784 (see sources) and this may be that David McNamara, but that is dependent upon his age being older than some sources record. The 1818 census has his age recorded as 61, but other sources indicate his age as 43 in 1813 and 47 in later land petitions. At some point he met and married his wife, a woman named Sarah Horne in Halifax. Sarah's father Jacob Horne is recorded as having large land holdings in the area of Eastern Passage near Halifax and David and Sarah had 4 children (James, Frances, John and Ellen) who are recorded in census and vital statistics data as having been born in Halifax. Also - A Poll Tax record from Herring Cove, Halifax County ? 1793, shows a "J. McNamara - Labourer - 1 (shilling)"... Herring Cove is directly across from land owned by Sarah Horne's father Jacob Sr., so this individual is placed within meeting distance to Sarah. David is referred to as "John Sr" in the 1881 census record, so the use of "J. McNamara" fits with that moniker. The poll tax indicates a number 890 and then the names of 3 men, the previous number 880 list 10 men's names and so on... Meaning these men were likely labourers working on farms and David is listed as a yeoman in the 1818 census and is clearly more of a farmer by trade, rather than a fisherman. The family then went for a time to the Charlestown area of Boston, Massachusetts (according to the vivid recollections of stories told to William 'Billy' McNamara' when he was a child.) There they had at least one child (David) and they returned to live in the River Inhabitants area of Cape Breton. Billy's great grandfather was the McNamara's third son 'David', and David is recorded in later census data as being born in the United States. According to records (sourced) the 1809 petition by David McNamara for 'title' of the island records that he was given a 'warrant' to survey the Isle of Bouchey in 1807, and he started occupying the island at that time. According to the 1817 petition he was given permission to occupy the island in 1813, even though he had actually been occupying the island since 1807 and in the 1819 petition it states that the 1817 petition resulted in David being granted a 'lease', but his full grant was finally 'recommended' after his 1819 petition. Also - In the 1819 petition David is referred to as an immigrant of Scotland (possibly for the purpose of more easily obtaining the land). In the earlier 1817 petition he is referred to as a 'native' of Cape Breton and in the 1818 census where David is recorded as 'John Sr' McNamara, his birth place is clearly recorded as Ireland. The 1818 census also indicates his age as 61, and there is a blank after his age in the category of 'Fit'. Men under the age of 60 in the category of 'Fit' have the word 'Fit', or 'Not' indicated. This census also indicates that David is married with 7 children. 5 were born previous to his occupying the Island and 2 (Bridget and Maurice) were born on the island. All 7 of David and Sarah's children are well documented as being married, having children and living either on the island or near the area of River Inhabitants. | McNamara, David John Sr. (I9289)

362 | DEMOS, John Putnam: Entertaining Satan: Witchcraft and the Culture of Early New England, 1982, Oxford University Press. [ISBN 0-19-503378-7] Page 71: "It is significant, moreover, that many children of accused witches went on to useful even successful lives. Thus, ... David LAKE, the younger son of Alice (convicted and executed at Dorchester in 1651) was a leading man in the town of Little Compton, Rhode Island." [source indicated: G. Andrews Moriarty's The Early Rhode Island Lakes, in The American Genealogist, XII, 17-24.] Page 170: "Alice LAKE of Dorchester was reportedly enticed into witchcraft 'by the devil...appearing to her in the likeness, and acting the part, of a child of hers then dead, on whom her heart was much set." [Here, Demos is quoting Burr quoting Nathaniel Mather's 1684 letter to his brother Increase Mather.] Pages 301-302: "The process of dispersal is a little easier to follow for the family of Alice LAKE, convicted and executed at Dorchester in about 1650. Her husband Henry moved away at once; his name appears regularly in the records of Portsmouth, RI, beginning in April 1651. Meanwhile the four LAKE children, all less than ten years old, remained in Dorchester. One, probably the youngest, was 'bound out' by the town meeting to a local family for a 'consideration' of 26 pounds--and was dead within two years. The other three were also placed in (separate) Dorchester households. At this point their trail becomes badly obscured. (One was living as a servant to an uncle--still in Dorchester--in 1659.) Later, having reached adulthood, the same three were found in Rhode Island--and then in Plymouth Colony, where their father had removed by 1673. It appears, therefore, that the family was eventually reunited, some two decades after the event that had broken it apart." [NOTE:: The uncle alluded to was likely Thomas LAKE, Henry's brother.] [sources cited are Burr quoting Mather's letter to his brother; Fourth Report of City of Boston; and Moriarty's Early Rhode Island Lakes.] FOX, Sandford J.: Science and Justice: the Massachusetts Witchcraft Trials, 1968. Page 43: (footnote) "... Nevins, Salem Village, p. 254 ... gives 'a partial list of persons accused whether convicted or not.' There are 126 names on the list. The following names were omitted: 19 who were executed; Giles Corey, who was pressed to death for failure to plead; 8 who were convicted but released when the prosecutions ceased ceased on September 22, 1693; and two who were convicted and died in prison--a total of 30. Volume 135 of the Massachusetts Archives, pp. 1-6, lists 91 names of persons accused of witchcraft from 1656 to 1750, including those executed. No attempt has been made to reconcile the Archives' list with Nevins. ..." Page 64: "The colonists seem to have adhered quite closely to the injunction of [Henricus] Institoris and [James] Sprenger in their [15th century book] Malleus Maleficarum that the first test for the presence of witchcraft in these cases was the verdict of the physicians." [See also Malleus Maleficarum at wikipedia. Henricus Institoris was an aka for Heinrich Kramer.] Page 93: "As to those who were executed as witches, the question of whether the defense [of insanity] might have been useful to them had it been in some way presented in their behalf involves more than the usual difficulties of such historically precarious speculation. The unfortunate fact is that we have no record at all of executions before 1692 on which to make a judgment. ... As to Mrs. LAKE and Mrs. KENDAL, there is virtually no information at all except Reverend Hale's statement that both denied their guilt to the end." 376 | died before May 18 1737 from online records About Robichaud, Charles 'Cadet' ROBICHEAU His land and house were situated on the actual grounds of Fort Anne, in Port Royal, which were expropriated from him for an extension of the Fort. This was witnessed on December 2, 1705 by the land surveyor, Lord de Labat. According to the census of 1700 he had 12 head of cattle and 14 sheep, on 16 acres of land. After he lost his land he moved his family to a piece of land about 1/2 mile from the Fort. Unfortunately, the fort did little to protect Charles and his family from the raids of the New England settlers. After a failed attack by Colonel Church in 1704, a more successful one on June 6, 1707, caused extensive damage, including the burning of the church, stores, and a number of houses, including those owned by Charles and his brothers. Charles remained and rebuilt his home , although Port Royal went to the British in 1710. In August of 1714, La Ronde Denys de Pensens prepared a list of families living around Port Royal. The list included Charles and his family. He was still living there in 1718. While living there and being surrounded by the English, life became unbearable. Charles then moved to the Truro area which was far away from the English and it allowed them to sell their cattle to Louisburg. Truro was close to the sea, so this made excellent connections to Prince Edward Island. This is where Charles was in 1720. Charles along with his descendants were called Cadets (meaning older ones) to distinguish them from the Prudents and the Nigannes. 393 | DOUCETTE, Frederick Joseph ?Freddie? ? age 76, Brooklyn, Yarmouth Co., formerly of Mayflower, Digby Co., passed away peacefully on Friday, July 15, 2016 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital surrounded by his family. Born October 17, 1939 in Quinan, he was a son of the late Avite and Elizabeth ?Lizzer? (Frotten) Doucette. As a teenager, Freddie moved to Banff, Alberta where he was hired as a cook at Lake Louise. A few years later he returned back home and married his girl, Genevieve. Throughout his life, Freddie believed in hard work. He will be remembered by many as a loom-fixer at Cosmos Imperial Mills/Dominion Textiles, where he worked for many years, after which he worked for LaFarge Canada as a cement finisher. He was also a self-taught, skilled carpenter. Freddie had many interests, all of which included his family and the outdoors. He was well-known for his ability to build beautiful strip-cedar canoes and kayaks, not to mention the canoe trips he took with Genevieve, and then with his daughter Carolann, which they still did up to three years ago, along with the many hundreds of friends who tagged along for the annual Easter weekend trip. He also enjoyed mackerel fishing, working in the woods, tree planting and grafting, playing cards and enjoying a good snack of peanuts. Of course, he also loved hunting, and like every good hunter, he had a story about the big one that didn?t get away. In 1962, while hunting with friends in Shelburne, he shot a massive non-typical deer with webbed antlers with a total of 24 points. His story and photos of the deer have appeared in Big Buck magazine, and he was recognized by the Boone and Crocket Club (founded by Theodore Roosevelt in 1887). But most of all, family was the most important thing to Freddie. He leaves behind his wife of nearly 55 years, Genevieve (Vacon) Doucette, as well as their children, Mark (Tina) Doucette, Forest Glen; Carolann (Darren) Samms, Brooklyn; Stephen (Christine) Doucette, Antigonish, as well as grandchildren, Ian, Evan, Tara, Cody, Alicia, Julie, Erica and great grandchildren, Monique, Rebecca, Connor, Rylan, Charlie and Phoenix. Also surviving are sisters, Emily, Evelyn, Lorraine, Marie (Richard), Vivian (Danny) and Elizabeth (Kenneth), as well as brothers, Delbert (Joyce) and Flavien (Dorothy). Visitation will take place from 7-9 Sunday evening, with prayers at 8 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 18 from St. Agnes Church, Quinan, Father Albeni d?Entremont officiating.
