1819 MURPHY, FRANCES (LEGERE) - The death of Frances Lillian Theresa "Fran" Murphy, wife of W. Douglas Murphy, of 19 York Street, Champlain Heights and "Fran's Haven", 105 Otis Road, Cassidy Lake, Kings County, occurred in the Palliative Care Unit of the Saint John Regional Hospital on Saturday, 21 August 2004, following a long and painful struggle with breast cancer.

A proud Saint Johnner, Mrs. Murphy was a life-long resident of the city. She was born on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, December 8, 1927, the eldest child of the late Leo Joseph and Lillian Theresa (Quinn) Legere. Frances grew up in Saint John's South End, a stone's throw from where her mother's great-grandparents, James and Catherine (Creegan) Murphy, settled after immigrating from the Parish of Carlingford, County Louth, Ireland, in 1840. Although socialized in an almost entirely Irish context, she was equally proud of her Acadian roots. Her paternal great-grandparents, Simon and Elisabeth (Forest) Legere-both eighth generation Maritimers-migrated to St. John County in 1888 and established a boarding house on Greenhead Road whose residents propagated the city's Acadian community.

Frances Legere attended St. John the Baptist and St.
Vincent's Girls' (High) Schools. A promising student, she left school in November 1942 to become foster mother to her three younger sisters. From April 1952 until February 1960 she was employed with the F. W. Woolworth Company. She married fellow South Ender, Doug Murphy on May 18, 1959 and together they shared forty-five happy years of married life.

Frances was a woman of immense Christian faith and throughout her life took a keen interest and active role in the affairs of the Church and, by extension, the entire community. For the last thirty-nine years she was a member of St. Joachim's Parish. She was a member of the Catholic Women's League of Canada for nearly sixty years. She was a former member of the choir and Ladies' Society of St. John the Baptist Parish, the League of the Sacred Heart and the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. She was a former member of the Champlain Heights Home and School Association; the East Saint John Clean Air Coalition and a volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Diabetes Association.

Beginning in the late 1970's, she worked as a volunteer teacher's helper at Champlain Heights School and, later, as a clerk at Roxie's Gift Shop and Card Land. She was a long-time member of the Liberal Party and a member of the Saint John Chapter of the Irish Canadian Cultural Association. Her hospitality, infectious enthusiasm and animated manner of expression endeared her to a wide circle of friends. She was, above all, a loyal, affectionate and proud wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

She is survived by her devoted husband, W. Douglas Murphy; her children: Stephen Douglas "Steve" Murphy (Jocelyn, nee Corkum), of Halifax; Peter Douglas Murphy (Melody, nee Clarke), Washington, D.C. and Ellen Frances Catherine Murphy (Jeremie "Jerry" Pineau) of Saint John and three grandchildren: Nora Elizabeth Nunn Murphy, Antigonish, Nova Scotia; Brendan Douglas Murphy, Halifax and Agnes Mary Frances Murphy of Washington. In addition, she is survived by her three sisters: Sister Therese Frances Leger (Mary (Joan) Anne) of the Association of Hermits of MacAdam's Lake, Nova Scotia; Catherine Theresa "Kay" Williams and Margaret (Elizabeth) "Liz" Reid (Paul) of Saint John; by one brother, Barry Andrew Donald Leger (Patricia, nee Maber); two half-brothers: John (Paul) Anthony (Michele, nee Cyr) of Fredericton and Michael Leo Leger, of Saint John; by brothers and sisters-in-law, Amelia "Toby" (nee Tobias) Legere of Saint John; George "Ted" Murphy (Sandra, nee Doucette) of Stratford, Prince Edward Island and Cassidy Lake, Kings County and Ruthann Galbraith (Gordie) of Grand Bay-Westfield, New Brunswick and by her step-mother-in-law, Mrs. Doris (Ferguson Moore) Murphy of West Saint John. She is also survived by one half-uncle, Raymond Noel (Berla, nee Burden), of Saint John, thirty nieces and nephews and thirty-six grand nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her dear friend Madelyn Williams of Saint John. In addition to her parents, Lillian (1952) and Leo Legere (1976), she was predeceased by her father and mother-in-law, Walter Hatfield Irving Murphy (1998) and Winifred Gertrude (Cox) Murphy (1991), by her step-mother, Margaret (Campbell) Leger Beckingham (1996), by two brothers Edmund Joseph "Ned" Legere (1999) and Joseph Legere (in infancy, 1936), by a half-brother, Joseph Leo Leger (in infancy, 1964), by brother-in-law, Ronald James "Skeezie" Williams (2004); by a niece, Caroline Elizabeth Murphy (in infancy, 1965), a nephew, Eric Douglas Jensen (1997) and by two grandchildren in utero (2001 and 2004).

Leger, Frances Lillian Theresa (I8325)

1820 Murphy, W. Douglas ? The death of Walter Douglas ?Doug? Murphy, of the Turnbull Home, 231 Britain Street, husband of the late Frances (Legere) Murphy, occurred peacefully at Bobby?s Hospice, 385 Dufferin Row, West Saint John, at 9:45 on the evening of All Saints Day, 1 November 2013, surrounded by his loving family.

A native and lifelong resident of Saint John, Doug was the firstborn of Walter Hatfield Irving Murphy and Winifred Gertrude ?Wynn? (Cox) Murphy. He was born on the Feast of the Epiphany, 6 January, 1933?his parents? first wedding anniversary?and grew up in the City?s South End (where his maternal grandparents, Harry and Ellen (Marshall) Cox, were prominently identified with the grocery trade). He retained a lifelong affection for the South End and its people.

Doug?s early life and development were profoundly impacted by the influence of his grandfather, Captain George Murphy (1874-1955), a retired sea captain, whose people had immigrated to Saint John from Brahalish, Parish of Durrus, County Cork, Ireland, in 1831. The eminent New Brunswick author H. A. Cody was a friend of Doug?s beloved ?Danny??and Rev. Cody?s frequent visits to the Murphy residence on Britain Street inspired in Doug an enduring interest in Canadian literature.

In May of 1937, a four-year-old Doug witnessed the flight of the Graf Zepplin over Saint John. For the remainder of his life he was passionately interested in aviation. During his youth, he was an accomplished model airplane builder. Perhaps the greatest disappointment of his life came in 1951 when, at the completion of his training as a commercial pilot, it was discovered that he suffered from red/green colour deficiency and that he was, for this reason, ineligible to fly professionally.

Douglas Murphy attended King Edward, Saint John Junior High School (Union Street) and Saint John Vocational School. A lifelong passion for music first manifested itself when Doug was a boy soprano in the choir of Trinity Church. He went on to study musical theory and composition with Professor William Comerford Bowden. Throughout the 1950s, 60s and early 1970s, he and his band, ?Doug Murphy?s Orchestra? were widely known throughout southern New Brunswick. He also played with the ?Troubodors? and with Paige Ormandy?s and Bruce Holder?s orchestras. For more than forty years, he was a member of the Third Field Artillery, Loyal Co. Band, retiring with the rank of Master Warrant Officer. He was a long-standing member of St. Mary?s Band, a member of the Black Cats Big Band and the leader of the Buskers Big Little Band. Songs written and or arranged by Doug Murphy have been performed by numerous orchestras, bands and choirs. During the early 1970s, he taught music at the Hampton Consolidated School. From 1965 until 2008, he served as choir director at St. Joachim?s Church in East Saint John. He served on a number of Saint John Diocesan liturgical committees and, together with the late Rev. Peter Bagley, coordinated the music for the episcopal ordination of the late Most Rev. Arthur Gilbert, Bishop of Saint John. Doug was a charter member and executive office holder of the New Brunswick Musician?s Association, local 815 AFM.

Douglas Murphy had a long and varied career in the retail industry, working in his youth as a framer at Empire Wallpaper before founding Saint John Art Framing with partner Vince Livingstone. He later combined his knowledge of sales and music, working for Ben Goldstein in his Charlotte Street music store, later managing Goldstein?s Union Street store before opening his own business, Melody Mill Ltd., at 36 King Street, in 1960. In 1968 he was recruited by the F.W. Woolworth Company to establish the record department at Woolco. He later expanded into cameras and electronics. He retired in 1992.

Doug dabbled in ventriloquism and magic (illusions) and was an accomplished and painstaking carpenter and craftsman. He was a member of the Magic Circle, of the Irish Canadian Cultural Association, the New Brunswick Liberal Association, the East Saint John Clean Air Coalition and the Champlain Heights Home and School Association.

A lifelong student of comparative religion, he was received into full communion with the Catholic Church by Rev. Robert G. O?Donnell, C. Ss.R, in St. Peter?s Church, on 28 December 1958. After moving to Champlain Heights, in 1965, he became very actively involved in the life of St. Joachim?s Parish. In addition to his role as choir director, he was a member of the church building committee which oversaw the construction of ?new St. Joachim?s?. He was a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Rev. H. G. Ramage Council 8364. Doug was a man of many quiet benefactions and was the recipient of numerous awards, recognizing his various contributions to the greater Saint John community, including the Merit Award ?in recognition of outstanding contribution to the Province of New Brunswick? and the Queen?s Jubilee Medal.

From April of 1965 until November of 2008, Doug resided at 19 York Street, in Champlain Heights, where he made numerous close friends. By a bitter-sweet confluence of circumstances, declining health led to his taking up residence at the ?Turnbull Estates? in his beloved South End, on November 5, 2008.

Doug Murphy was first and foremost a family man. On May 18th, 1959, he married the love of his life and fellow South Ender, Frances Lillian Theresa Legere, daughter of Leo J. and Lillian (Quinn) Legere, in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Together they were blessed with forty-five years of extraordinarily happy married life. Fran predeceased him on 21 August 2004. Doug was a proud, loving and attentive father to his three children, Stephen Douglas ?Steve? (Sara Colburne), of Halifax; Peter Douglas (Melody, nee Clarke), of Ottawa, and Ellen Frances Catherine, of Saint John. In addition to his children, he is survived by five adoring grandchildren: Nora Elizabeth Nunn Murphy and Brendan Douglas Murphy, both of Halifax; Agnès Mary Frances Murphy (born on his 70th birthday), Leo Kenneth Douglas Murphy and Gregory Edmund Charles Murphy, of Ottawa. He also leaves to mourn their loss, his brother and sister: George Philip (Ted) Murphy (Sandra, nee Doucette), of Stratford, Prince Edward Island and Cassidy Lake, Kings County; and Ruthann Alice Galbraith, of Grand Bay-Westfield. In addition, he is survived by his step-mother, Doris (Ferguson Moore) Murphy of West Saint John, by brothers and sisters-in-law: Barry Leger (Patricia, nee Maber), of Saint John; J. Paul Leger (Michèle, nee Cyr) of Fredericton and Michael Leger, of Saint John; Sister Therese Frances Leger (Joan), Franciscan of Halifax, of Musquodoboit Harbour, Nova Scotia; Catherine "Kay" Williams, of Saint John; Elizabeth "Liz" Reid (Paul) of Huntsville, Ontario and Amelia "Toby" (nee Tobias) Legere, of Saint John. He is also survived by thirty nieces and nephews and thirty-six grand nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his dear friends David and Madelyn Williams of Saint John.

In addition to his parents: Walter (1998) and Winifred (Cox) Murphy (1991), and by one sister and one brother, Barbara Jean and Harold Wilfred (both in infancy), he was predeceased by his father-in-law, Leo J. Leger (1976), by his step-mother-in-law, Margaret (Campbell) Leger Beckingham (1998), by his brother-in-law and lifelong friend, Edmund "Ned" Legere (1999), by brother-in-law, Ronald "Skeezie" Williams (2004); by a niece, Caroline Elizabeth Murphy (in infancy, 1965), a nephew, Eric Douglas Jensen (1997) and by four grandchildren in utero.

Arrangements are in the care of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (646-2424). The family will receive visitors at the Funeral Home on Monday from 7-9 p.m. and on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Joachim's Church, 603 Loch Lomond Road, Saint John, on Wednesday, November 6, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery with a reception commencing at 12:30pm at the Simonds Lions Auditorium. In 1965, Valerie Hart and Daniel O?Brien (d. 2016) were married in Dartmouth, the beginning of an elegant partnership by which each was nurtured and sustained for 51 years, and though which they enjoyed many personal and professional friendships both at home and around the world. They have two sons profoundly grateful for the love and example they have been given: Prof. Peter O?Brien (Paula Simpson-O?Brien, Halifax), and Fr. Craig O?Brien, SSC (Sackville, NB). Also in Halifax are ?Gramma?s? adored grandchildren, Rachel and Gabriel.

Val?s career as a Registered Social Worker brought her work as a family and child counsellor, notably at the Addictions Research Foundation in Toronto in the 1960s; in Halifax, at the Family Service Bureau during the 1970s and at the Atlantic Child Guidance Centre through the 1980s, and then in private practice in Fredericton, New Brunswick, where Dan was President of Saint Thomas University from 1990-2006. She was Dan?s constant support in that position and in subsequent presidencies at the Atlantic School of Theology and NSCAD, serving an unscripted, but crucial role as host, social convenor, intermediary, and ?fixer,? as well as providing more formal service, like chairing the organizing committee of the Saint Thomas Gala Dinner. Offshoots of her couples, individual, and family therapy were numerous teaching responsibilities, expert witness testimonies, and professional conference and public service presentations. Val served a number of professional associations, including The Nova Scotia Association for Divorce and Family Mediation, of which she was a founding member and president. Her voluntary board memberships included Bonny Lea Farm, Theatre New Brunswick, the Vanier Institute of the Family, and the Muriel McQueen Foundation. Val?s perpetually bright and optimistic disposition was cherished and relied upon by many beloved friends and colleagues, and it was in evidence right to the end, when progressive dementia had quelled her lifelong appetite for constant physical motion. She jogged or participated in aerobics classes daily well into her 70s, and, along with Dan and friends, loved skiing, golfing, and tennis at home and abroad. She and Dan enjoyed extensive travel in Canada and internationally.

Val?s spiritual journey began in the church of her family, St. Andrew?s United in Halifax. In later years she worshipped as an Anglican, and, with her husband Dan, in the Roman Catholic Church. In 2005, she was awarded the Bene Merenti medal, a papal decoration. In a private ceremony, her remains will be interred with Dan?s in the columbarium of St. Augustine?s Church in Chester, NS, where they had a home to which they retired in 2006.

Through life and in her years of illness, Val was buoyed by the love of her many friends and family. We are profoundly grateful to them and to the sensitive and patient attention of her caregivers, and especially Suzanne (Zane) Rasay-Rodillas, Ariane Newton, Dr. Ken Rockwood, and the staff in Parkland Evan Hall and Parkstone Enhanced Care, Garden Court. In addition to her parents and husband, Valerie was predeceased by her sister Paula (David) Mann and sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Donald MacKinnon. As well as her sons and grandchildren, she is survived by her sister Donna Hart (Halifax), brother Reg (Pauline) Hart (Miramichi), brother-in-law Ross (Janet) O?Brien (Dartmouth), and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Val?s memory can be made to the Dan and Valerie O?Brien Bursary fund (St. Thomas University), the Atlantic School of Theology or NSCAD University scholarships and bursary funds, the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia (particularly its Artful Afternoon program), the Northwood Foundation (especially the Adult Day Program) or a charity of your choice. Visitation at Cruikshank?s Halifax Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Friday, November 13, 7-9pm. Funeral at St. George?s Round Church, 2222 Brunswick Street Saturday, November 14, 1pm, Fr. Craig O?Brien officiating. Protocols for masks, social distancing, contact tracing will be observed.

DNA. The Mothers of Acadia Maternal DNA project is conducting ongoing research to verify their origins. In 2010, Stephen White reported that Marguerite Doucet had a Haplogroup T2b. I don't know the details regarding how many of her descendants were tested to support this report. Ongoing test results are also reported here. As of May 2014, 7 descendants have consistently reported a T2 haplogroup, indicating European origins.
Mother.
According to Stephen White[2]: "It is not possible that Germain Doucet's children to have been a sister of Jacques Bourgeois wife, as some writers have claimed, considering that Bourgeois' father and mother-in-law were only married in 1627. It is nevertheless possible that Germain Doucet married secondly Guillaume Trahan's daughter, who subsequently gave him no children who survived in Acadia, bit it is also possible that his second wife was Jacques Bourgeois's sister and not his wife's sister."

1838 Not much is known about the life of Mary Ormsby Sabin. She was one of eleven children of John Ormsby and Grace Eleanor Martin.

She married Israel Sabin on 20 May 1696 in Rehoboth, Mass. and had 12 children together.

Note: this record has been updated on 9/14/2016. The original birthdate given to Mary was October 22, 1671, but was actually the birthday of her sister (also named Mary) who died shortly after birth. The Mary Ormsby if this record who married Israel Sabin was born several years later in 1677 and given the same name as her deceased sister (which was fairly common in those years of large families). This is confirmed in "Massachusetts, Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988" for Rehoboth (credit to M. Thayer for pointing out this error so that it can be corrected)
Ormsbee, Mary (I9365)

1839 Note: Antoine was the second husband of Jeanne Cabrat (born 5 Feb 1627 in France). Jeanne Cabrat's first husband was Jehan Poirier (born about 1626 in France), who arrived in Nova Scotia about 1636 with a group of people from France, including Guillaume I Blanchard (born about 1590 in France). Guillaume I Blanchard was married to Huguette II Poirier (born about 1593 in France); and she was the full-blood sister of Jehan Poirier (born about 1626 in France). (See "Acadian Descendants," by Janet B. Jehn). Jehan Poirier (born about 1626 in France) died about 1652. His widow, Jeanne Chabrat (born 5 Feb 1627 in France), and her second husband, Antoine Gougeon (born about 1626 in France), had a daughter named Huguette II Agathe Gougeon or Gagean (born about Dec 1657 in Port Royal, Nova Scotia, Canada). To add to the confusion of names, Huguette II Agathe Gougeon or Gagean was married to Guillaume III Blanchard (born abt. 1650 in Nova Scotia, Canada). The generational intermarriage of the Poirier, Gougeon, and Blanchard families has lead to much confusion and incorrect merging of several files in Family.Search.  Chabrat, Jeanne (I3817)

Text: From Stephen A. White. Agnes-Eulalie is described as a legitimate child in her baptismal record, but her parents were only married on 29 Jul 1743, nearly six months after her birth. "This irregularity was apparently the reason for her being sometimes called BRUN and sometimes PELLERIN." If parents are correct, they would have been first cousins.
"I list Joseph BRUN as...father along with a question mark and a substantial explanatory note regarding her alias and what it is likely to mean."

1843 November 6, 2001 -I retired a few years ago and started collecting family history. Both grandfathers came to Canada to start new lives and didn't bring much with them. I have pieced together some information from the past and continue to add to my collection. I have gathered photographs, dates of birth, marriage and death of various family members. I am presently a member of ancestry.com and rootsweb.com and have gotten addresses of persons with the same names in the U.S., Canada, Europe and the United Kingdom. Hope to mail a form letter to find family tree lineage. Have compiled Ancestry.com 'Family Group Record' and 'Ancestral Chart' for each of the present Family members. I have searched many data bases. Have visited cemeteries to verify information compiled to date. Hope to search archives in the Province of Ontario and the Federal Archives in Ottawa for copies of birth certificates, marriage certificates, immigration records to verify information compiled. I hope to publish a book with Ukrainian family recipes that have been handed down to me, explaining our culture and heritage, along with the family trees of our forefathers and families. The Marciniak family is from Budnufka, Skalat, Ukraine (Near Ternopili). The Refcio family is from Glemboka, Styra Sombir, Ukraine. The Jaremko family is from the District of Lviv, Ukraine. (I have no knowledge of the village except that it was close to Bibrka and Lviv through listening to discussions my father and mother-in-law had. The Bordenuk family is from Rohozna, Chernivtsi, Ukraine. The Danylyk family is from Bibrka, near Lviv, Ukraine. Jaremko, Gloria Frances (I11014)
