    • MARBLEHEAD - Mary P. "Nonnie" (Larkin) Duncan, 84, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004. She was the wife of the late Ken Duncan.

Born and raised in Swampscott, she was the daughter of Edward and Margaret (Callahan) Larkin. She attended Swampscott schools and initially worked at General Electric Co.

She met Mr. Duncan while he was in the Army Air Forces and upon his return from England after World War II, they began dating. Mr. Duncan opened the world-famous Maddies Sail Loft restaurant in 1946 and Mary worked with him at night as a waitress in the Topside dining room. They married in 1948 and had two daughters, Sheila and Sharon of Marblehead.

Mrs. Duncan stayed at home with her children, helping out at the Loft in the evenings and eventually became fondly known as "The Paymaster" to all the employees of the Sail Loft for more than 55 years.

The Duncans were married for 40 years, and although they worked hard together they did have the opportunity for some wonderful trips to Spain, the Caribbean, Hawaii and their very favorite, Ireland.

After Mr. Duncan died in 1989, she recuperated from a heart attack and joined the Jewish Community Center, where she worked out faithfully for nine years every morning at 7. She had a healthy new lease on life and loved every minute of it.

In 1993, her only grandchild, Kendra Duncan, was born and immediately became the light of Mrs. Duncan's life. They were best friends and confidants to the end.
