- Francis Vaughn Tobin (Frank) was born Feb 17, 1899 in Burlington Junction, MO (Nodaway county) to Thomas Tobin 1866-1941 (of Callan, County Kilkenny, Ireland) and Ellen (Nell) Vaughn 1867-1928 (born in Martinsburg, W Virginia). Frank was the 3rd child: 1.Jim Tobin 1894-1959, 2.Bob Tobin 1895-1973 (and Vivian), 4.Irene Tobin Blatter 1900-1963, 5.Ed Tobin 1902-1983 (and Nora), 6.Catherine Tobin 1904-1973 (and Ed Zivny). Frank grew up on the farm 2 miles east of Burlington Junction. He attended Conception, MO HS and studied at St. Benedict's College, Atchison, KS. He bought his grandads farm just west of his dad's place and built a house in 1927 (GPS 40,26,57 N 95,00,48 W).
He married Nora Catherine Kelly 1903-1938 of Ford City, MO at Stanberry, MO on Sep 29, 1927. They had 7 children in 10 years. His 5th child was Kieran Joseph who was born July 6, 1934 with a condition like a "blue baby" and died age 2 on July 14, 1936 when Nora was due to have her 6th child a month later, Mary Ellen. Nora died at the birth of her 7th child with scarlet fever on Jan 30, 1938. The baby, Terrance, died the day before on Jan 29th. With the contagion, they were both buried simply at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Maryville, MO.
Frank had helpers with the children until he married Nora's sister, Margaret Ellen Kelly 1897-1963 on Jan 4, 1941 at St. Joseph Cathedral (MO) by Frank's first cousin with the same name, Fr. Francis Tobin. Margaret then had Frank's 8th child, Charles Philip Tobin (Fr. Chuck) on July 17, 1942.
Frank suffered with arthritis greatly but died of heart in St. Bernard's Hospital, Council Bluffs, IA on May 2, 1950. His funeral on May 5th by his cousin, Fr. Patrick Cummins, OSB, was in the midst of a severe windstorm. He was buried next to Nora and his 2 sons who died. Margaret died Oct 24, 1963 of colon cancer and is buried beside Frank and Nora.
