    OBITUARY FOR BARRY LEGER

The death of Barry Andrew Donald Leger occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on April 26th, 2020. Born in Saint John, NB on October 24th, 1932, he was the son of the late Leo and Lillian (Quinn) Legere.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Patricia (Maber) and his devoted children Peter (Mary) Jensen of Saint John, NB; Mark (Susan) Jensen of Lantz, NS; Andrew (Suzanne) Leger of Dieppe, NB; Trish (Darren) Wheaton of Lower Coverdale, NB and Barry (Lynne) Leger of Upper Golden Grove, NB. He leaves behind ten loving grandchildren - Joseph, John, Nicholas, Jillian, Colin, Nathalie, Noah, Ben, Madelyn and Liam. In addition, he is survived by his two sisters, Elizabeth (Paul) Reid of Huntsville, ON and Catherine ?Kay? Williams of Saint John, NB; two brothers, Paul (Michele) Leger of St. Andrews, NB and Michael Leger of Alberta; two sisters-in-law, Sandra Simpson of Saint John, NB and Amelia ?Toby? Legere of Saint John, NB; and brother-in-law Kenneth Maber of Miami, FL, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Barry graduated as Class Valedictorian in 1949 from St. Vincent?s Boys High School and completed Senior Matriculation at Saint John High School. He went on to graduate with a Diploma in Engineering from St. Francis Xavier University (St. FX) and continued his studies at the Nova Scotia Technical College. He then returned to St. FX and obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree.

He worked at the Saint John Shipbuilding Limited in the Planning and Scheduling Department for 33 years and retired in 1992; the later years focusing on building Frigates for the Canadian Frigate Program. One of the highlights of his career was being invited to sea trials on one of the completed ships and taking over the helm, even if only for a few minutes?

Barry was a true gentleman, quick with a joke and full of charm. He enjoyed spending time at the family cottage, working on carpentry projects, listening to musicians from the ?big band? era and visiting car lots picking out his next new vehicle. In his younger years, he enjoyed downhill skiing at Rockwood Park, numerous family camping trips and travelling through the US.

His pride was in his family. He was very proud of who they all became and thoroughly enjoyed each of their successes. He loved being a husband and father. One of his greatest joys came from his grandchildren, and they adored him. It was not unusual to find him on the floor interacting and playing their favourite games, watching cartoons or engaging them in conversations about their latest interests. They will miss him immensely.

Barry volunteered for the Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society and Romero House. He was a faithful member of Saints Joachim & Ann Parish and KOC Council #8364.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Eric Jensen; by his father and mother-in-law, Harold and Etta (Foster) Maber; by his step-mother, Margaret Leger Beckingham; by his brother, Edmund ?Ned? Legere; by his sister, Frances ?Fran? Murphy and her husband Douglas Murphy; by his sister, Sister Therese of the Divine Silence (nee Joan Leger); by his nephew, Mark Reid; by brothers-in-law, Donald Maber, Douglas Maber, William Maber, Peter Simpson and Ronald Williams and by sisters-in-law, Sandra Maber, Florence Maber and Fernand Maber.

The family would like to thank the staff of 5CN and NICU at the SJRH, especially, Dr. England and Dr. Kolyvas. Special thanks to Father Doug McNeill.

Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424). Due to these uncertain times during COVID-19, services will be held at a later date.

Barry married Patricia Maber (daughter of Harold Maber and Etta Foster) [Group Sheet]

    Sr. Therese Frances Legere
    FEBRUARY 7, 1937 ? NOVEMBER 7, 2017
Leger, Sister Therese Frances The Franciscans of Halifax and the family of Sister Therese of the Divine Silence (Mary Joan Leger) announce her death which took place on November 7, following a courageous battle with cancer in her 81st year and the 61st year of her religious profession. She was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, February 7, 1937, a daughter of the late Leo J. and Lillian T. (Quinn) Leger. Wooed by God as a child, Sister Therese spent the remainder of her life consciously in the presence of the Blessed Trinity. She was educated in St. John the Baptist School, St. Vincent?s Girls High School, and graduated from the Provincial Teachers? College, Fredericton, in 1956. She taught for one year at Garnett?s Settlement, St. John County and then, having reached the mandatory age, she answered the call which she had intuited from early childhood, entering the Sisters of St. Martha, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, August 15, 1957. Sister taught at East Bay, Eskasoni, Guysborough and St. Andrews, all in the Diocese of Antigonish. She professed perpetual vows on August 15, 1962. After a period of research and discernment with contemplative communities in the United States which started in 1970, Sr. Therese sought a dispensation from her vows with the Sisters of St. Martha and began to live a radically simple contemplative life under the authority of Bishop William Power of Antigonish and his delegate Father Angus Daniel MacDonald. On June 16, 1986 Sr. Therese received the Consecration of Virgins. For nearly thirty years she lived in vows as a hermit. Eventually, after the death of Father MacDonald, and the approach of old age, Providence introduced the hermits of McAdam?s Lake to Father Roberto Donato and the community of the Franciscans of Halifax. In December 2007, Sister Therese and her Sister in the Lord, Phyllis Rooney relocated to Musquodoboit Harbour and with Sister Patricia Douglas, embraced a new contemplative life. She made perpetual vows as a member of the Contemplative Branch of the Franciscans of Halifax on May 22, 2010. Sister Therese was predeceased by her mother and father; her step-mother, Margaret (Campbell) Leger; her sister and foster mother, Frances Murphy; her brothers Edmund ?Ned?, Joseph (in utero), and Joseph Leo (at birth); by two nephews, brothers-in-law, Ronald Williams and Douglas Murphy, as well as by her brother and sister-in-the Lord: Father Angus ?Donnie? MacDonald and Sister Phyllis Rooney. She is survived by her sisters: Catherine Williams, of Saint John, and Elizabeth Reid (Paul), of Huntsville, Ontario; by three brothers, Barry (Patricia Maber), of Saint John; J. Paul (Dr. Michele Cyr), of St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, NB; and Michael, of Barrhead, Alberta; by her sister-in-law, Amelia (Tobias) Legere, an aunt, Berla (Burden) Noel; by 24 loving nieces and nephews: 38 grand-nieces and nephews and 5 great-grand-nieces and nephews and numerous cousins (all indebted to her for her unfailing prayers). A Prayer Vigil and Visitation will take place at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 6476 Bayers Road, Halifax on Monday, November 13 from 7:30-9 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Roberto Donato in St. Catherine?s Church on Tuesday, November 14 at 11 am. Reception to follow in the Church Hall. Burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers the Family requests that donations can be made to the Franciscans of Halifax Society, Halifax or Divine Mercy School, Saint John. We extend our deepest gratitude to Nova Scotia Palliative Care Services, Northwood Home Care and Cruikshanks Funeral Home, Halifax.

    Notes:

MURPHY, FRANCES (LEGERE) - The death of Frances Lillian Theresa "Fran" Murphy, wife of W. Douglas Murphy, of 19 York Street, Champlain Heights and "Fran's Haven", 105 Otis Road, Cassidy Lake, Kings County, occurred in the Palliative Care Unit of the Saint John Regional Hospital on Saturday, 21 August 2004, following a long and painful struggle with breast cancer.

A proud Saint Johnner, Mrs. Murphy was a life-long resident of the city. She was born on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, December 8, 1927, the eldest child of the late Leo Joseph and Lillian Theresa (Quinn) Legere. Frances grew up in Saint John's South End, a stone's throw from where her mother's great-grandparents, James and Catherine (Creegan) Murphy, settled after immigrating from the Parish of Carlingford, County Louth, Ireland, in 1840. Although socialized in an almost entirely Irish context, she was equally proud of her Acadian roots. Her paternal great-grandparents, Simon and Elisabeth (Forest) Legere-both eighth generation Maritimers-migrated to St. John County in 1888 and established a boarding house on Greenhead Road whose residents propagated the city's Acadian community.

Frances Legere attended St. John the Baptist and St.
Vincent's Girls' (High) Schools. A promising student, she left school in November 1942 to become foster mother to her three younger sisters. From April 1952 until February 1960 she was employed with the F. W. Woolworth Company. She married fellow South Ender, Doug Murphy on May 18, 1959 and together they shared forty-five happy years of married life.

Frances was a woman of immense Christian faith and throughout her life took a keen interest and active role in the affairs of the Church and, by extension, the entire community. For the last thirty-nine years she was a member of St. Joachim's Parish. She was a member of the Catholic Women's League of Canada for nearly sixty years. She was a former member of the choir and Ladies' Society of St. John the Baptist Parish, the League of the Sacred Heart and the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. She was a former member of the Champlain Heights Home and School Association; the East Saint John Clean Air Coalition and a volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Diabetes Association.

Beginning in the late 1970's, she worked as a volunteer teacher's helper at Champlain Heights School and, later, as a clerk at Roxie's Gift Shop and Card Land. She was a long-time member of the Liberal Party and a member of the Saint John Chapter of the Irish Canadian Cultural Association. Her hospitality, infectious enthusiasm and animated manner of expression endeared her to a wide circle of friends. She was, above all, a loyal, affectionate and proud wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

She is survived by her devoted husband, W. Douglas Murphy; her children: Stephen Douglas "Steve" Murphy (Jocelyn, nee Corkum), of Halifax; Peter Douglas Murphy (Melody, nee Clarke), Washington, D.C. and Ellen Frances Catherine Murphy (Jeremie "Jerry" Pineau) of Saint John and three grandchildren: Nora Elizabeth Nunn Murphy, Antigonish, Nova Scotia; Brendan Douglas Murphy, Halifax and Agnes Mary Frances Murphy of Washington. In addition, she is survived by her three sisters: Sister Therese Frances Leger (Mary (Joan) Anne) of the Association of Hermits of MacAdam's Lake, Nova Scotia; Catherine Theresa "Kay" Williams and Margaret (Elizabeth) "Liz" Reid (Paul) of Saint John; by one brother, Barry Andrew Donald Leger (Patricia, nee Maber); two half-brothers: John (Paul) Anthony (Michele, nee Cyr) of Fredericton and Michael Leo Leger, of Saint John; by brothers and sisters-in-law, Amelia "Toby" (nee Tobias) Legere of Saint John; George "Ted" Murphy (Sandra, nee Doucette) of Stratford, Prince Edward Island and Cassidy Lake, Kings County and Ruthann Galbraith (Gordie) of Grand Bay-Westfield, New Brunswick and by her step-mother-in-law, Mrs. Doris (Ferguson Moore) Murphy of West Saint John. She is also survived by one half-uncle, Raymond Noel (Berla, nee Burden), of Saint John, thirty nieces and nephews and thirty-six grand nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her dear friend Madelyn Williams of Saint John. In addition to her parents, Lillian (1952) and Leo Legere (1976), she was predeceased by her father and mother-in-law, Walter Hatfield Irving Murphy (1998) and Winifred Gertrude (Cox) Murphy (1991), by her step-mother, Margaret (Campbell) Leger Beckingham (1996), by two brothers Edmund Joseph "Ned" Legere (1999) and Joseph Legere (in infancy, 1936), by a half-brother, Joseph Leo Leger (in infancy, 1964), by brother-in-law, Ronald James "Skeezie" Williams (2004); by a niece, Caroline Elizabeth Murphy (in infancy, 1965), a nephew, Eric Douglas Jensen (1997) and by two grandchildren in utero (2001 and 2004).

Arrangements are in the care of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (646-2424). The family will receive visitors at the Funeral Home on Monday and Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Joachim's Church, 603 Loch Lomond Road, Saint John, on Wednesday morning, August 25, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
