- FITCHBURG - Arthur E. Shapland, Jr., 71, died unexpectedly Sunday, July 13, 2008, while visiting his son in Bristol, Conn.
He was born in Fitchburg on July 4, 1937, the son of Arthur E. and Margaret (MacFarlane) Shapland. He was a lifelong resident of Fitchburg. He graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1955 and from Union College in Barbourville, Ky., in 1959. He did graduate work at Morehead State College in Morehead, Ky.
Arthur was the Director of The Family Health and Social Service Center in Worcester and of the Lowell Community Health Center until his retirement. He was a member of the adjunct faculty at University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester. After his retirement he became a substitute teacher at Leominster High School, where he also taught Driver?s Education. He was involved with the high-school sports? teams as an official scorer for the soccer, football, and basketball teams. He was an antique- and classic-car enthusiast, an avid coin and stamp collector, as well as a voracious reader.
Arthur is survived by his wife of 47 years, Bonnie (Davidson) Shapland; his sons, Christopher Shapland of Bristol and Glen Shapland of Fitchburg. ?Grampie? will be sadly missed by his three granddaughters, Erin Kathleen, Hannah Sidney, and Margaret Mary Shapland. He is also survived by his sisters, Barbara Sweatman of Leominster, Jean Shapland of Fitchburg, and Judith Widlake of Glen Burnie, Md.; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
