Jean Baptiste Legrand was born in France in 1824 and came to the United States in 1848, settling in South Louisiana. In 1862, he enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private in Company C of the 8th Louisiana Infantry, known as the Attakapas Guard, commanded by Alcibiades DeBlanc. The 8th Regiment marched to Virginia to fight the Battle of Manassas. Legrand, however, fell ill prior to the battle and was hospitalized at Harrisonburg. He died there sometime between June 30 and Sept. 26 of 1862. His death was listed in the Rockingham Register under the name of G.B. Legrand.
