- Gloucester - Murphy, Thomas Vincent, 94, of Gloucester, formerly of Medford, passed away peacefully on Tuesday August 14, 2018. Beloved husband of the late Elizabeth (Boudreau), with whom he shared 69 years of marriage. He will be deeply missed by his children Thomas V. Murphy Jr. and his wife Eileen of Gloucester, Mary Ellen Burke and her husband Brian of Gloucester, Susan Murphy and her partner Jen Anderson of Newbury, Sandra Carbonneau and her husband Donald of Fountain Hills, AZ, and Carol Conlon and her husband John of Gloucester. Loving brother of Josephine McCormick of East Greenwich, R.I. Cherished grandfather of Donald, Amy, Brian, Yvonne, Elizabeth, Lisa, Sharon, Linda, Marilyn, Joseph, Thomas and Mary, 15 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
In 1941, at the age of 17, he learned that Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was under attack and signed up to join in the war effort from April 27, 1942 to November 18, 1945, he served in the United States Navy?s Armed Guard, as a Gunner?s Mate protecting U.S. Merchant Ships during World War II. He was off the coast of the Solomon Islands in 1945 delivering supplies to the Marines during the Battle of Guadalcanal, and aboard the USS Fredric C. Howe off the coast of Japan in the fall of 1945 when the war ended. After the war, he worked for the Ford Motor Company at the Somerville MA assembly plant. Soon after its closing in 1958 he started his own business in Middleton, painting trucks for many local and national companies which he ran until he retired. He loved his Catholic faith, his family and his country. He will always be remembered for his laughter and for loving a good joke. He was a good man and knew that he was blessed from above. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Winifred (Fitzgerald) Murphy, and his siblings Leo Murphy, Catherine Higgins, Fredrick Murphy, and Rita Cignoni.
The family would like to thank the many wonderful staff at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Gloucester, for their exceptional care and kindness to our father.
Visiting hours are private. His Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 17, 2018, at 11:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect St. Gloucester. Family and friends are cordially invited. Burial is in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester. Arrangements are by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St. Gloucester.
