Mary Frances Gunther, 96, of Le Mars, died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, at her home following a brief illness.
Mary Frances Gunther was born Aug. 7, 1915, on the family farm in Le Sueur, Minn., the daughter of Leo and Teresa (Merry) Marx. One year later the family moved to Brownsville, Texas for three years. They returned to the Midwest and settled in Le Mars. Mary received her education in Le Mars, graduating from Le Mars High School.
In 1931 Mary and Claire Henry Gunther were united in marriage at Elk Point, S.D. They made their home in Le Mars where they raised their seven children.
Mary worked at the Le Mars Medical Clinic for 16 years and the Sioux County Sheriff's Department for nine years, retiring in 1983.
Claire died following an accident Sept. 16, 1960.
Mary was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars.
Mary will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Claire and his wife, Beverly, of Lampe, Mo., John and his wife, Janet, of Sunset Beach, Mo., Phillip and his wife, Judy, of Fairmont, Minn., Jim and his wife, Sue, of Le Mars, Mark and his wife, Barb, of Muscatine, and Doug and his wife, Connie, of Escondido, Calif.; 22 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Robert and his wife, Alice, of Sioux City, and George of College Park, Md.; and two sisters-in-law, JoAnn Marx and Fran Marx, both of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Claire; her daughter, Mary Theresa "Molly" Embernate and her husband, Ben; sisters, Geraldine Haley and her husband, James and Pat Steele and her husband, Woodrow; brothers, Dick, Bill, Wally and Jack and his wife, Rita; and a sister-in-law Caroline Marx.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Matt Hewitt will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-8 p.m. with a scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass on Friday.
