- Clarence Sonnier, age 92, was called home to his Heavenly Father at 12:55 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2009, at his residence in Gillis, LA, after a period of declining strength and health. Clarence was given to Horace and Oza Boulet Sonnier on May 26, 1916, in Iota, LA. On January 17, 1942, he was married to Verna Mae Cormier Sonnier, who greeted him in heaven. They were together for more than 59 years and had many joyous experiences, companionship, and raised their five children, whom they loved dearly. A lifelong resident of the Iowa-Lake Charles area, he was retired from the Lake Charles Court House and Hebert's Garage in Iowa, LA.
Left behind to cherish his memories are his two sons, Donald James Sonnier, Sr. and wife, Margaret of Gillis and Clarence Stephen Sonnier and wife, Lisa of Carlyss; three daughters, Lerline Mae Babineaux of Sulphur, Rita Lois Credeur of Gillis, and Joyce Ann Hupperich of Lake Charles; two sisters, Nellie Dilbeck of Oklahoma and Shirley Gunderson of Freeport, TX; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives whom he loved dearly. Preceding him in death was his wife, Verna Mae Cormier Sonnier, his grandson, Donald James Sonnier, Jr., his great-great-grandson, Andrew Sweeny, and his nine brothers and sisters.
His funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Lake Arthur. Msgr. Charles Dubois will officiate. Burial will follow in Andrus Cove Cemetery under the direction of Matthew and Son Funeral Home of Lake Arthur. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. and again on Saturday, from 8 a.m. until time of service. A rosary will be prayed Friday evening at 7 p.m. Pallbearers will be Nicholas Babineaux, Ernest Lee Babineaux, Steve J. Comeaux, Christopher B. Credeur, Tyler Sonnier, Charles Meaux and Cody Meaux. Honorary pallbearers are Hiram L. Babineaux, Richard Sonnier, Edwin Patrick and Jeffery Babineaux. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.matthews andsonfuneralhome.net.
