- Obituary for Desire J. Poirier
Desire J. ?Sam? Poirier, 90, of 414 State Road, Templeton, died peacefully Thursday, December 1, 2011 in Heywood Hospital, Gardner surrounded by his family following a brief illness.
Born in Notre Dame, N.B. Canada on November 8, 1921, he was the son of the late Emile and Agnes (Cormier) Poirier.
He was a woodworker employed by Nichols and Stone Company of Gardner for 34 years, retiring in 1986.
Desire was a member of St. Martins Church in Otter River, and served as a Greeter, the caretaker of the church and was on the Barbeque Committee. He was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council #396 of Gardner, member and past Director of the Acadien Social Club of Gardner, former Chairman of the Nichols and Stone Co. Union, former President of the In Shop Credit Union of Nichols and Stone Co. and was President of the Otter River Recreation Association during the 1970?s.
Desire enjoyed fishing, blueberry picking, playing pinochle and going to yard sales. He loved telling jokes, both in English and French. He was a wonderful man who was loved by all who knew him.
He was predeceased by his wife of 30 years, Geneva (Goguen) Poirier who died October 29, 1986.
Desire leaves two sons, Gilbert Poirier of Otter River and his companion Kathleen Baczewski of Gardner and Raymond Poirier of Otter River; two daughters, Carol Allard and her husband Larry of Gardner and Melda O?Neil and her husband John of Greenville, NH; one stepdaughter, Aldie Goguen of Prince Edward Island, Canada; two brothers, Gerard Poirier and his wife Rose of Leominster and Leon Poirier and his wife Anita of Windsor, Ontario, Canada; five grandchildren, Phillip Poirier, Stacey Drake, Derek Allard, Nina O?Neil and Johna O?Neil; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by several brothers and sisters and by one stepson, Gerald Goguen.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, December 5th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 1:00 p.m. in St. Martins Church, 247 State Road, Otter River. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.
Calling hours in the funeral home will be Sunday, December 4th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
